Why should I work with a coach from The Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, rather than another coach?

Important question! Obviously you could hire a certified and credentialed coach and you would be fully assured of high quality coaching service. Here’s why we think you‘ll gain significantly when working with one of HI’s coaches–in–training.

First, HI is often termed ‘The Harvard of Coaching Schools’. We are one of the oldest schools in the business, we’ve long enjoyed a reputation as one of the best and our target participant market is the seasoned professional. This is an important detail, it means that the typical coach-in-training in HI’s Coach Certification Program is already well established in their field of specialization with years of experience and expertise. They come to HI in order to deepen their coaching skills and engage in a learning experience.

For the purposes of HI’s Coaching in the Community Project, we tap participants with backgrounds that interface with your needs. If you are an emerging woman in business, we match you with a coach–in–training who possesses years of experience in the business world.

Does my coach from The Hudson Institute need to be located in my area of the country?

No. Most of the HISB coaches–in–training participating in this program can work in person or on the phone. You and your coach will want to develop a plan for meeting places and times that best suit your needs and availability. It’s likely that the majority of the coaching will occur over the phone with one or two sessions in person.

What is the best way for me to make a coach selection?

The HI Coaching in the Community website provides detailed information about each HISB coach–in–training available to you. Prospective clients are encouraged to carefully review the list of coaches to identify those who best meet their needs. We recommend you select and interview two coaches–in–training before making a final decision on one.

Once you have targeted two potential coaches for yourself, it is important to address these questions before calling to arrange a time to explore a coaching agreement:

  • Carefully consider what issues you want to address in coaching.

  • Call and ask the prospective coach your questions.

  • As you talk, consider: Does the training and experience of this coach–in–training fit your needs, background and coaching goals? Do you feel comfortable with this individual? What qualifications are shared by Hudson Institute coaches?

HISB coaches–in–training represent a diverse pool of ‘seasoned professionals’ with many common abilities, including:

  • Advanced education degrees,

  • Senior level or professional positions within an organization,

  • Diverse fields, industries, and functional expertise, and

  • Experienced in using 360 feedback and other feedback instruments.

What if I select a coach, begin coaching and discover that I am not benefiting as much as I anticipated?

Coaching is only successful when the client is engaged and has goals. If your coaching is not meeting your expectations, please discuss this with your coach-in-training immediately. Explore the possible reasons, such as: Is your coach-in-training listening carefully, partnering fully and honoring your needs and interests? Are you, the client, following through on the coaching work you agreed to do? To better meet your needs, when discussing your issues be direct and clear with your coach–in–training. If you have completed these steps, and your coaching experience still is not meeting your needs, please let your coach-in-training know that you would like to discontinue coaching with him/her. He or she will promptly respond to your concerns and help you select another coach.
